DONNO'S HIGHER GROUND TATTOO

8/21/2014

HEY, EVERYBODY!!

It is finally happening! I am opening my own tattoo shop!
In honor of the man who taught me how to tattoo, Web Blair, and the shop that he and I opened while I was apprenticing under him, I am naming the shop Donno's Higher Ground Tattoo. It is in Bryson City, NC, and it's in a fantastic spot at the corner of Main St and Everett St- the literal heart of downtown Bryson City.

My family and I are VERY excited about this!!! I've been tattooing for 15 years, it's about time I started working for myself!

There is a WHOLE lot of cleaning and painting and other similar work to do before the shop is ready to open, so I have my days cut out for me this coming week. PLUS there is all the legal red tape- business privilege fees, insurance, health department inspection fees, etc, etc, etc- which leads me to my next point- KICKSTARTER!

Yes, I have set up a crowd funding page to get my start up costs covered. I have included all sorts of cool rewards for anyone willing to kick in as little as $5, with rewards all the way up to the $8,000 level, and at all points in between! There's stuff like temporary tattoos, limited edition prints, t-shirts, custom paintings, and of course, real tattoos....  They're all listed out for you on the Kickstarter page.

Any contribution that you can make would be immensely helpful- and even if you CAN'T contribute, you can STILL HELP, just by passing along the link to your friends, family, co-workers, and exceptionally wealthy but possibly mentally unstable acquaintances looking to become patrons of the arts!

The link to the Kickstarter is https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/681476671/donnos-higher-ground-tattoo

Please check it out, watch the video, look over the rewards I'm offering, and contribute if you can! And again, even if you can't- please tell your friends!

Thank you SO much!!

Donno

PS_ I can add more incentives as the project goes on- if you have any cool ideas for other incentives I can offer, let me know! I'm always open to suggestions!!

Once again, I come to teach all the boys and girls about the true meaning of Friday the 13th!

Well, no, actually, I don't. I have no idea what the true meaning of Friday the 13th is... But I know it ISN'T about $13 tattoos.

The only thing that is cooler than looking at my artwork hanging in your club house or cubicle every day, is the satisfaction of knowing that you got it for a mere $13!!

Tebori... on my foot.

Ow, ow, ow, fucking ow.

I just had Takashi Matsuba tattoo a bat on my foot.
It looks awesome.

He did it the traditional Japanese way- tabori- which involves hand poking all the shading and color with a 30 needle double stack needle group on a stick...

There are many people out there who will tell you this method hurts less than regular electric machine tattooing. There are many people who told ME that... some of those people are right here with me in the room as I type... I want to punch those people in the neck. Hard.

People who tell you these things are not your friend. They are lying-ass liars, who need their lying mouths slapped shut.

This shit HURT LIKE A MOTHERFUCKER.

But it was well worth it. Look how cool that bat looks!

If you are a true tattoo aficionado, you owe it to yourself to get a tabori tattoo at least once in your life.... In fact, for me, I think EXACTLY once is just about right...

Friday the 13th: Every month that begins on a Sunday will contain a Friday the 13th, and there is at least one Friday the 13th in every calendar year.

The longest period that can occur without a Friday the 13th is fourteen months, either from July to September the following common year (e.g. between 2001–02, 2012–13, and 2018–19), or from August to October the following leap year (e.g. between 1999–2000 or 2027–28).

Friday the 13th can occur as many as three times in a single year; either in February, March and November in an ordinary year (such as 1987), or January, April and July in leap years (such as 2012).

Additionally, a lot of tattoo shops run special deals on Friday the 13th.

Me, personally, I respect tattooing and my clients too much to do $13 tattoos, but I WILL once again be doing a $13 print sale both at the tattoo shop AND here on my website! At midnight on Thursday, 7/12, I will change the prices on ALL my giclee prints from their regular $15-$30 to $13, and my enormous canvas prints from $200 to $130.

24 hours only folks, mark your calendars!

No, I'm not doing a $13 tattoo sale. I don't think they're a good idea, for a variety of reasons... But that's not important right now.
What IS important right now is that I AM having a $13 PRINT SALE!

All my limited edition, signed and numbered prints, each with it's own signed Certificate of Authenticity are for sale ALL DAY, FRIDAY APRIL 13, for only $13! Shipped!

Regularly $15, $20, or $30, they can be yours- while supplies last- for only $13!

BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE!
The big canvas Surf Gods print- regularly $200 can be had for a limited time for only $130!!

Act Now!
Operators are standing by!

Happy Friday the 13th, everybody!

Sure Fire Way To Get A Crappy Tattoo...

3/27/2012

I just had two potential customers come in the shop in a row, doing the single most foolish thing you can do when looking for a tattoo... Price shopping.

When looking to make a permanent change to your body, looking for the lowest bidder is pretty much always a bad idea.

Look for an artist who has experience. Who has a good portfolio. Who is willing to work with you to give you the bast tattoo possible with the idea you want realized... Not somebody who can beat any price...

The first girl who came in wanted some song lyrics, but she wasn't sure where to get them- on her ribs or under a tattoo on the right hand side of her back. I talked with her about the ways we could approach either spot, and typed up 2 different versions- the one for her back was justified to the left, so that it would form a straight line along the line of her spine, and have a soft curvy edge along the line of her ribs/hip. The other version was center justified, to flow more nicely on her ribcage... She loved it and decided to go with the words on her ribs.

19 words, total.
60 point Edwardian Script.

I gave her a damn good price for the amount of work that would be going into this tattoo... $220.

She said there was no way she would pay that much- the last guy she talked to said he'd do it for $100.

I didn't even have to say anything at that point. One of the other artists working said to her, "oooh, you want to be careful with that... There's a reason they're only charging that much- and it's not because they want you to get a great deal..."

Didn't matter to her. She wasn't interested in a great tattoo, just a cheap one.

Very shortly after she left another woman came in. She had a pretty crummy tattoo of a butterfly on her ankle, and wanted a quote on fixing it up. I looked it over and saw that basically I would just be doing a new butterfly over one that was already sort of half assedly there, and again gave a more than fair price- $100.

"OK, thanks. I have a friend who will do it for $35, I just wanted to see if you could do better than that."

Oh  man, was I steamed. I just said "well, good luck with that" and turned away. I mean, the shop minimum is $60 just to open a needle, and she thought I was going to beat $35? Really?

As she was leaving she said, "I only paid $20 for the tattoo in the first place. I guess that's why it needs to be fixed now. You get what you pay for, I guess."

Really? Did she really just say that, as she wandered off to get a $35 fix up?

Fucking people...

First Friday show, January 6th, 2012!

1/4/2012

I, along with the other artists from Synergy Tattoo, have an exhibit of our artwork going up at Crush Boutique in Knoxville, and the opening reception is Friday, January 6th!

I am putting up a bunch of paintings, including my most recent one- the largest water color I have ever done. I know Jerry Bean has some impressive new pieces he's putting up, and I've seen the other folks hard at work on their new stuff- I can't wait to see the show! I hope you can make it, too!

Most of the paintings will be for sale, and I'm going out to pick up some giclee prints of a few of my paintings, which we be available at the show AND here on my website! This is my first exhibit of any kind in Knoxville- I gotta admit, I'm pretty excited!

The opening reception starts at 5:30, and the boutique is located at 121 W Jackson Ave, and their # is (865) 249-8281.

I hope I'll see you there!
